BLOG: The X Factor NZ – Movie Soundtracks

Tom Batchelor kicked off last night's episode of The X Factor NZ, which was all about movie soundtracks!

Singing The Kinks' 'All Day and All of the Night' (featured in The Boat That Rocked), Batchelor said that it reminded him of his days performing in pubs in Dunedin. I'm not sure if it was the people dancing in cages he was referring to…

The general consensus from the judges was that although it was a great performance, they couldn't work out where he would be placed in the music market.

"It's about selling and I just can't see it," said judge Daniel Bedingfield.

Cassie Henderson performed Christina Perri's 'A Thousand Years' from the Twilight movies. This was the perfect choice for her as it's the type of song that would appeal to her age group.

Dubbed "the best voice in the competition" by Stan Walker, Whenua Patuwai stepped up his energy level from his previous performances. The crowd loved his rendition of Stevie Wonder's 'I Wish'!

Two of the judges said they had come into last night's show prepared to tell Patuwai that he was great but just didn't have the 'X Factor' – but that was all blown out of the water by his amazing performance.

"I heard your soul. You may be a lot more than we realise," Bedingfield said.

An emotional and somewhat distracted Benny Tipene sang 'Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You' from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You.

I thought it was cute and showed the cheeky side of his personality, but didn't suit him that well.

Mel Blatt said it was all too fake, but Tipene had a quick comeback to that comment: "It's Hollywood so of course it's a bit fake," he said.

GAP5 performed M.I.A.'s 'Paper Planes', a song I love and which has featured on numerous soundtracks including Pineapple Express and Slumdog Millionaire. I was quite disappointed by their performance, which really lacked energy.

But Walker said he has their back and is glad they stayed.  Bedingfield then made a joke. No one understood it, no one laughed and then we moved on.

Jackie Thomas sang The Cardigans' 'Lovefool' from Romeo + Juliet, which puzzled the judges.

"It lacked personality and it was the wrong song choice," Blatt said. "You wouldn't hear Barbra Streisand doing dubstep."

The performance of the night for me was Moorhouse. They really picked up their game, taking on Stan Walker's song 'Take it Easy', which featured in Kiwi movie Mt Zion. The occasion proved too much for Stan Walker, who was in tears over the fact they covered his song.

Tonight at 8pm we will find out who is next to leave the X Factor family. Tomorrow morning 3 News will be interviewing the unlucky act being sent home. Email us with your questions for them.
