Prominent New Zealand actor James Rolleston is out of hospital after spending more than a month in intensive care.

Newshub understands the 19-year-old Boy star has now been transferred out of Waikato Hospital to a rehabilitation facility.

The extent of Rolleston's injuries are being closely guarded by family, but a close source has told Newshub that "James is progressing well with his recovery".

"Every week James is making more and more progress."

It is currently unknown whether Rolleston will return to acting.

Rolleston, who is best known for his leading role in Boy, was involved in a tragic car accident on the night of July 26 which saw the car he was travelling in crash into an east Opotiki bridge.

A volunteer fireman told Newshub that "half the bridge" ended up in the car, and described the crash site as a "total mess".

Firefighters at the scene had to cut Rolleston from the car, one of whom described the injuries he sustained as "horrendous".

Rolleston and passenger Kaleb Maxwell were airlifted to Tauranga Hospital before Rolleston was transferred to Waikato Hospital's ICU.
