Brad Pitt is reportedly trying to get David Fincher to direct the sequel to zombie action flick World War Z.

Fincher, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Fight Club, The Social Network and Se7en, hasn't directed a film since 2014's Gone Girl.

Unnamed sources told Variety that Fincher and Pitt met to discuss World War Z 2, and that "the talks were initially lukewarm but now negotiations are much further down the road".

There are no plot details known about the sequel, other than it being "set during a zombie apocalypse".

Marc Forster directed the CG-driven, bloodless 2013 film World War Z, which pulled in US$540 million worldwide off a US$190 million budget. The German will not be returning for the sequel.

Fincher is said to be wary of sequels following his experience on Alien 3, but is good friends with Pitt after the three films they've made together.

World War Z studios Skydance and Paramount had no comment to make on who will direct the sequel.
