He's a fictional superhero - the most well-known embodiment of United States patriotism - but Captain America is about to get a real-life statue in New York marking 75 years since his creation.

The Marvel Comics character of New York native Steve Rogers, a wimpy military recruit turned super soldier, was created in 1941.

His storyline was centred in the World War II era, where his arch-nemesis is Nazi agent Red Skull.

Captain America is currently being played onscreen by Hollywood actor Chris Evans as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Captain America and Avengers franchises.

And now it's been revealed an almost 4-metre tall bronze statue of "Cap" will be installed in Brooklyn's Prospect Park on August 10, USA Today reports.

The statue will first be unveiled at the popular Comic-Con in San Diego later this month before it is shipped across the country.

Standing in a heroic pose, arm raised with his signature shield, the statue will read: "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn" - a line from Captain America: The First Avenger.

Vice president of licensing for Marvel at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media Paul Gitter says Cap has "inspired generations of fans serving as the ultimate global icon for freedom, strength and doing the right thing".

Captain America's most recent outing in Civil War, released earlier this year, was one of the most popular in the entire Marvel stable grossing more than $1 billion worldwide.
