Kiwi film Chasing Great has jumped to the top of the New Zealand box office overnight, opening at number one ahead of US comedy Bad Moms.

The Richie McCaw biopic has earned $89,186 from 97 screens, a record-breaking opening day for a NZ documentary.

Chasing Great is the story of McCaw's mission to win back-to-back Rugby World Cups, and includes exclusive family archive and behind-the scenes footage shot during the last year of McCaw's professional rugby career.

The film had its red carpet premiere in Auckland on Tuesday evening, and opened in cinemas across the country yesterday.

Transmission Films general manager Michael Eldred says the result is "outstanding and a "just reward for both the filmmakers and Richie".

"They have made a compelling film that gives a phenomenal insight into the psychology of success and endurance. It is a story that will inspire people of all ages."
