Troubled pop star Chris Brown has responded indignantly to an online video said to show him stomping on a fan's head in France, arguing he simply "handled the situation accordingly".

The 'Kiss Kiss' hitmaker, who has a long history of violent outbursts, was videoed at the Gotha nightclub in Cannes on May 18.

In the footage obtained by TMZ.com, Brown is seen on a platform and looks as though he steps on a person's head before angrily walking away.

Malek Mokrani claims he was the victim and was hospitalised with neck and head pains as a result of Brown's actions. He has posted a photo online of himself on a hospital bed, wearing a neck brace.

Mokrani tells TMZ he plans to file a police report.

Brown posted a video on Instagram, which starts with him saying "Let me address this shit real fast. Hey TMZ, f**k ya!"

Then, referring to himself in the third person and to Cannes as "cans", the 27-year-old states he "hurt no fans".

However, he admits to having an altercation with someone he says was a security guard.

"I don't think he knew who I was," says Brown.

"He assaulted me. Grabbed his hand around my throat, tried to push me out the spot.

"So, we handled the situation accordingly, and moved on."

It's not the first time Brown has had trouble in the Cannes nightclub. In 2012 he reportedly became engaged in a fight with club security officials after he was refused VIP table treatment.

This year's Cannes trip also got off to a bad start last month for Brown after he and his crew were kicked off a private jet at Miami International Airport for allegedly smoking cannabis onboard.

Brown was convicted in 2009 for his infamous beating of then-girlfriend Rihanna. He had further legal troubles resulting in community service and probation, along with other violent incidents that have involved Drake, Frank Ocean and members of the public.
