Christina Hendricks says Mad Men fans will see a different side to her character in the new season.

The actress plays office bombshell Joan in the popular AMC television series. The highly-anticipated season five is set to hit the small screen later this month and the cast have promised it will be worth the wait.

At the end of season four, Joan discovers she is pregnant while her husband is away at war.

She insists fans shouldn’t make assumptions about what will happen next.

“You’re going to learn a lot more about where Joan comes from very quickly,” Christina told Entertainment Weekly. “Just because we’ve left her pregnant doesn’t mean that there’s one option.”

Christina’s co-star January Jones has also spoken about what is in store for her character in the new episodes. January plays frustrated housewife Betty in the show and has defended her character’s faults.

“I think people liked Betty when she was submissive, unhappy and bottled up. It’s a character you can pity. Yes, she’s lacking parental skills, but people are really hard on her when she’s trying to seek out some things that make her happy. She is an imperfect character. She’s trying so hard and failing most of the time,” January explained. “You’ll definitely see a different side of her… It’s a side that the audience hasn’t seen before, ever. And I think that’s a good thing, whether you sympathise with it or not.”

Elisabeth Moss’ character Peggy will also change in the new season. Peggy is a copywriter at the New York based advertising agency which is the focus of the show.

She has teased that some of the scenes in the upcoming episodes have been her most memorable.

“This season for her is really, really, really about work…” she explained. “There’s definitely a moment this season that I will be really, really interested to see what people’s reactions are. And that episode involved my favourite scene that I have ever done in the show.”
