Cirque du Soleil's show Totem opens in Auckland tonight.

Totem follows the evolution of the human species through athleticism, beauty and comedy.

Cirque du Soleil tour publicist Francis Jalbert says it's difficult to get the show all the way to New Zealand.

"A show like this has 120 people on the road. It's 75 containers… it takes about eight days to set everything up."

To make the most of the effort, once the show's set up it'll be staying here until the end of September.

"A show like this is on the road non-stop for 10 years," says Jalbert. "This is our 26th city from the beginning."

Some of the cast members will even stay with the show for the full decade.
