American Sniper director Clint Eastwood is in talks to reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio in a new movie about the Georgia police officer suspected of planting a bomb at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

The Titanic actor's The Wolf of Wall Street co-star Jonah Hill has been tapped to play Richard Jewell, who was initially hailed a hero after he discovered a backpack full of pipe bombs and evacuated the area.

He became a media target after it was discovered that FBI profilers had listed him as a suspect, but he was never charged and was eventually exonerated.

DiCaprio, who is helping to produce the project, is reportedly set to portray Jewell's lawyer, and now his J Edgar filmmaker Eastwood has become the latest director to be linked to the top job, reports Deadline.com.

Paul Greengrass and David O Russell had also previously been approached to tackle the biopic.

The script has been adapted from a 1997 Vanity Fair article, The Ballad of Richard Jewell.
