Former yellow Power Ranger Nic Sampson not only has a gift for saving the world, but being a comedian seems to be working out well for him too.

At last year's Comedy Festival, Sampson was cited as one of the best newcomers New Zealand has to offer, and it's easy to see why.

Selling out the Basement Theatre on a Wednesday night, the only thing more red-hot than his jokes was his head of hair.

National Treasure is Sampson's latest show and it structures itself around an award ceremony trying to find New Zealand's own national treasure - of which Nic is a nominee. He is up against some tough competition for the prize though, and through the night Sam Neill, Ernest Rutherford and Captain Cook all make cameos to explain why they deserve the honour instead.

Sampson is at the peak of his game with this latest performance, providing an hour of entertainment that keeps the laughter rolling continuously.

As a performer, Sampson is high-energy and incredibly engaging. You can't help but feel like he genuinely loves doing this, as he just puts so much of himself into his performance. It's the type of comedy that could never really be caught in its true essence on camera, the audience reactions and Sampson's wonderful enthusiasm making for a great show that must be seen live.

If you're like me and like to be left alone to laugh in peace at comedy shows, I recommend not sitting anywhere near the front as there's a hearty dose of audience interaction.

There are few comedy shows where I've laughed as hard as I did throughout National Treasure, it's a beautiful gem of comedic goodness which is well worth your time.
