Comedy Festival: Sanjay Patel's Casual As review

Sanjay Patel might not be a familiar name to some, but many in the New Zealand Twittersphere will have come across his genius.

I've been following him on Twitter for a couple of years. He's always one of the first to come up with current, topical tweets that are absolutely hilarious - so in saying that, I did expect a good show from him.

Patel's performing his Casual As show in this year's NZ International Comedy Festival and I caught one of his performances at Montecristo. Did he live up to my expectations? Yes, he did.

The hour-long show delves into a range of topics on how to go through life without all the fuss.

There was music, dancing, job interview tips, racism and then more dancing to make the audience "forget" about the racism – much like the neuralyzer gadget in Men in Black films.

Patel's scripted audience participation skit and his dubstep remake of the Interislander song were definitely highlights to look out for.

All in all, his jokes were subtle, slow-paced and deadpan - and I suspect that's why he didn't get too many laughs from the audience - but it's the type of humour I enjoy, so I loved it.

As you might assume from the title, Patel's show is definitely a casual affair, but a thoroughly good way to tie up your 2015 comedy festival experience.

Sanjay Patel will be performing Casual As at Montecristo in Auckland tonight and tomorrow night.
