The 2016 San Diego Comic-Con - one of the biggest pop culture events on the calendar - has unveiled some new trailers for the most anticipated upcoming films.

As could be expected, the new material created much fanfare at the event and also on the internet.

The age of the superhero film is still upon us, with many of the new trailers released coming from the DC Cinematic Universe including Wonder Woman, Justice League and Suicide Squad.

The Justice League trailer follows on from this year's Batman V Superman and shows Bruce Wayne sets about bringing the team together.

But Marvel Studios didn't disappoint their fans, releasing a mind-bending new trailer for Doctor Strange played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

They also released more cast details about the Black Panther film which is set to start filming in January.

Black Panther is set in the fictional African country if Wakanda. Lupita Nyong'o has been cast in the film as Nakia - a long-time character in the comics. Michael B Jordan is set to play Erik Killmonger - the nemesis of the titular character played by Chadwick Boseman.

Boseman made his Black Panther debut in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War.

Meanwhile, Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson was also confirmed to play Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in the studio's first stand-alone female sole film.

New Zealand's own Niki Caro has been rumoured to be a front-runner to direct it.

Caro isn't New Zealand's only link to the Marvel universe, with director Taika Waititi at the helm of the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok film slated for release in 2017.

While filming has only recently started, the crowd at Comic-Con were treated to a small teaser about what the Norse god was doing during the plot of Civil War.

A bronze statue of Captain America was also unveiled at Comic-Con celebrating 75 years since his creation before being installed in Brooklyn's Prospect Park in August.

Other trailers released as part of Comic-Con were for the J.K. Rowling story Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them which has Eddie Redmayne as protagonist Newt Scamander.

The classic story of King Kong is also getting a re-boot with the same producers of the most recent Godzilla film.

Star Trek fans weren't left out in the cold either, with a teaser for a new television series called Star Trek: Discovery which follows the crew of the USS Discovery.

Very few other details were revealed about the new series.
