American rock band Counting Crows disappointed hundreds of fans at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington by cancelling their show after the opening act had played.

The band had already postponed the show from Saturday night to Sunday because lead singer Adam Duritz was sick.

Duritz posted a photograph of himself on Facebook earlier on Sunday and wrote "Soundchecking "Start Again" & now "Untitled (Love Song)" - hey! My voice works! Sweet."

Several hundred people gathered at the The Michael Fowler Centre on Sunday night, with the venue about two-thirds full.

The opening act finished about 8pm.

About 8.45pm a man came on stage and introduced himself as the band's pianist.

"I'm really sorry, but Adam's not going to be able to sing tonight. He's still sick," he said to an audible groan of disappointment.

"We thought he could do it, but he's not going to be able to sing. We sincerely apologise."

Ticketek is refunding all tickets.

The band is due to play at The Civic in Auckland on Monday night.
