Courtney Barnett performs on The Tonight Show

Grammy nominated Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett has appeared on The Tonight Show, jamming a cover of the Grateful Dead's 'New Speedway Boogie'.

The tribute series, started by The National, has seen indie artists, including The War on Drugs and Phosphorescent, perform the Grateful Dead tunes and now Barnett joins them.

More covers are said to be on the way and the list of names runs long: Kurt Vile, the Flaming Lips and TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe to mention a few.

When finished, the sessions will be a compilation to fill up around six hours.

Barnett had performed tracks from her acclaimed 2015 LP Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit just a week earlier on the season finale of Saturday Night Live.

Rolling Stone asked the Best New Artist Grammy-nominee about her music plans for the future.

"I'll probably make a record this year," she said.

"It takes me a long time to get things done, or just to make decisions about when things are gonna get done. So who knows? Probably not. It'll probably be f—king forever to think about. I don't know. Maybe. There's a one in five chance [sic]."
