British actor Craig Charles has quit his role in a popular UK soap opera to revive his cult sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf.

Charles shot to fame in the 1980s playing Dave Lister in the comedy, and went on to land a role in long-running British drama series Coronation Street after Red Dwarf ended.

In 2012, the cast returned to Red Dwarf, which is broadcast across the world in countries including Australia, New Zealand and the US, for its first full series since 1999, and now it has been confirmed that a follow-up to the 10th season is in production.

Craig has also announced he is quitting his role in Coronation Street to focus on the comedy.

He says in a statement, "I have had an absolutely fantastic 10 years on Coronation Street and I will be very sad to leave... [My character] has become a huge part of my life and I have made some amazing friends with whom I will always keep in touch.

"But I feel I owe it to my colleagues on Red Dwarf to join them in filming the new series and finding out what is in store for Lister and the others. I would love to return to Coronation Street at some point in the future."

The 11th series of Red Dwarf, also starring Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules, and Robert Llewellyn as Kryten, is to return to the small screen next year.
