Tonight the best heads of hair in the nation have squared off at the Auckland Town Hall for the Wella Trend Vision Awards.

At stake is a place in the biggest live hairdressing competition in the world in Madrid.

There were 18 finalists in the running tonight to represent New Zealand in Spain in October.

The gold winners from tonight will go to Spain, and the highest scoring entry by an apprentice in each region will win a Trend Vision Apprentice award and one year of Wella education.

It's all just hair, but the looks are inspired by everything from David Attenborough’s frozen planet to 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Getting the right model is key. You can get a professional, but most agencies won't let you cut a hair on their heads.

“We just work with it if we wanted to cut and shave we wouldn't go with a model from an agency, but I like to go that way, they hold themselves really well on stage,” Auckland stylist Chinney Yeap says.

At times like these it helps to be surrounded by people who understand your pain

“I'm a hairdresser as well… I know what he's going through so I don't mind if he's an arsehole you get very stressed at times,” model and stylist Ashley Nott says.

If the styles on the cat walk are anything to go by, the natural look is out and futuristic cyberpunks are in. Blame Gaga for most of it, and Rihanna for the rest.

Judge Shar Sutherland Todd knew what she was looking for.

“We were really just looking for something that embodied the whole of the hairdressing industry and the technical skill and the absolute overall outcome.”

The winner was Mana Dave of Blaze Salon in Auckland.

Hairdressers from seventy countries will converge on the world champs of hair next month.
