After announcing the game at E3 in June, Bandai Namco has given fans a first look at gameplay in the forthcoming Dark Souls III.

A new trailer was debuted during Microsoft's media briefing at Gamescom, which kicks off with a cryptic voiceover: "Yes, indeed. As they say on pilgrimage: 'The fire fades, and the lords go without thrones.'"

After that and a few shots of the world, the video breaks into a series of clips of a hero fighting various monsters. Many of these look like they'll be bosses; all of them look outlandish and decidedly Dark Souls-esque.

The combat, too, looks very much in keeping with the series. The trailer shows a lot of evasive rolls and careful timing of attacks, as well as the painful results of not getting out of the way of enemies' attacks in time.

Dark Souls III is a sequel to Dark Souls II, but unlike that game, it is directed by series creator Hidetaka Miyazaki. It's set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in early 2016.
