Comedian Dave Chappelle has honoured late pop legend Prince at a stand up show in San Francisco, describing his death as the "black 9/11".

Chappelle was reportedly distraught with the news, which he heard through media, and almost cancelled his set.

"I almost thought about not coming tonight, but my band was like, 'Yo, Prince would definitely not condone that.' And now there is no place I'd rather be," Chappelle said after taking the stage, local media agency Chronicle reported.

"This is black 9/11.

"It's so much better that we grieve together," he said.

Prince and Chappelle had a working-type relationship, playing off each other in a way that told of their mutual admiration.

"I'll tell you what: I didn't know him well, but I knew him well," Chappelle said, reflecting on their relationship.

Chappelle performed a skit dressed as Prince called True Hollywood Stories as told by Charlie Murphy on his sketch show, Chappelle's Show.

Years later Prince one-upped Chappelle, using a picture of Chappelle dressed as him as the cover for his 2013 single, 'Breakfast Can Wait'.

Chappelle told Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon the move by Prince was unbeatable.

"That's a Prince Judo move right there. You make fun of Prince in a sketch and he'll just use you in his album cover.

"What am I going to do -- sue him for using a picture of me dressed up like him? That's checkmate right there."
