Rock icon David Bowie's ashes have reportedly been burned at Burning Man.

The singer died in January after a battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most talented and innovative artists of our time.

According to E! News, his widow Iman gave permission to Bowie's godchild to take a portion of his ashes to the festival in Nevada.

"David's godchild and David had long talks about Burning Man and what it stands for, and David loved the message behind it," a source told E! News.

The singer's ashes were left at the Temple, which is erected for festival goers to remember their loved ones - then burned down at the end of the event.

He was then remembered with a simple ceremony.

"We played [David's] music the entire drive from our camp to the Temple and back... Most of us had the Bowie [lightning bolt] face paint on in his honour," an eyewitness was reported as saying.
