Deadpool 2 may have just lost its director.

A series of creative differences between director Tim Miller and star Ryan Reynolds are behind the decision, Deadline reports.

Miller hadn't formally signed on for the second film but he was very involved in developing the script, and the expectation was that he would go on to direct the film.

His loss will be a big blow for the production team, who came together to create one of the most successful films of this year.

New Zealand was no exception, with the film taking more than $5 million at the box office.

It took seven years from concept to completion for 20th Century Fox to create the cheeky, foul-mouthed character of Deadpool.

Fans won't have to wait as long for the second film, with a 2018 release date set for Deadpool 2.
