Pop star Demi Lovato is "taking a break" from music and the spotlight after the fallout over controversial comments she made were published this week.

The 'Heart Attack' singer has been accused of body-shaming after criticising Taylor Swift and saying her 'Bad Blood' video doesn't feature women with "normal bodies".

Lovato says she won't apologise for the comments, but appears to be so unhappy with the reaction to them she's quitting the entertainment industry for a year.

"So excited for 2017. Taking a break from music and the spotlight - I am not meant for this business and the media," Lovato tweeted, along with hitting back at those offended by her comments.

Responding to a Twitter user's question as to why she's leaving the industry, Lovato replied: "Dunno. It doesn't feel worth it anymore. I'd rather do charity work".

Her controversial comments were made in an interview with Glamour magazine. As well as claiming stars of the 'Bad Blood' video had abnormal bodies, she also attacked Swift's feminist credentials.

"I think having a song and video about tearing Katy Perry down, that's not women's empowerment," Lovato said.

"We all do things that aren't, but I have to ask myself, Am I content with calling myself a feminist? Yes, because I speak out.

"Talking about it at all is doing all the work. And I think every woman does her part in some way. But I think in certain situations, certain people could be doing more if they're going to claim that as part of their brand."

She was friends with Swift for years and often photographed with her, but by early this year, Lovato called the 'Love Story' singer and others out for not supporting Ke$ha in her court case against Dr Luke.
