The creator of one of the most famous games of all time, Diablo, says New Zealand is fast becoming a hub for gaming development.

David Brevik, designer and producer of gaming classics Diablo and Diablo 2, is in town for The New Zealand Game Developers Conference.

"I think you will see giant growth in the gaming market here. And now with the advent of digital distribution you can put your game anywhere and so this [New Zealand] will become known as a hub, I would guess," says Brevik.

"It's really impressive that there is quiet a talent here. It's almost an epicentre of really positive game growth and game development.

"There are even good university programmes and things like that, people are getting together and making product.  I'm really impressed with the development - it's sophisticated, especially for what I would consider to be a pretty young market".

He was invited to the conference by Auckland-based developer Grinding Gear Games, creators of Path of Exile.

Diablo was a clear point of reference for Exile, which has gone on to become hugely popular around the world.

Brevik was a co-founder of Blizzard North, one of the most successful video game companies in history. He is now CEO at Gazillion Entertainment, responsible for Marvel Heroes.

"Being able to use Iron Man, or Guardians of the Galaxy, Hulk and Spider-Man - all these things all together in the same game is a privilege and honour," he says.
