Digital Nationz 2014 will have the biggest virtual reality showcase New Zealand has ever seen, with Media Design School and Bigpipe Broadband teaming up to bring 20 Oculus Rift SDK2 headsets to the show.

The Oculus Rift Software Development Kit 2 (SDK2) is the latest version of a virtual reality headset that has garnered enough attention that the company developing it, Oculus VR, was purchased by Facebook earlier this year.

"I can't wait to see what Media Design School and Bigpipe Broadband have in store for us! We are very fortunate to have their support at DNZ this year because this wouldn't have been possible without them," says Digital Nationz event manager Peter Hall.

"Virtual Reality is one of the most interesting and engaging technologies currently being developed, and for our installation to be twice the size as what we did last year is staggering."

Among the Oculus Rift demonstrations at DNZ will be a space trucker game developed by Media Design School, in which players have to safely fly a cargo ship through hostile territory.

As well as the Oculus Rift, Digital Nationz will feature Techincal Illusions' CastAR glasses for the first time in New Zealand. The augmented reality headset projects digital images onto the wearer's field of vision, allowing the display of game-like heads up displays and holographic visuals.

Digital Nationz 2014 takes place from September 27 to 28 at the Vector Arena in Auckland, combined with the Gizmos, Gadgets, and Technology Show.
