Disney has announced a sequel to animated 2012 hit Wreck-It Ralph, set for a March 2018 release.

Little is known about the storyline of Wreck-It Ralph 2, but it will see Ralph leaving the arcade and 'wrecking' the internet.

The announcement was made during a Facebook Live broadcast with filmmakers Rich Moore and Phil Johnstone on Friday morning (NZ time).

Moore says that Ralph and Vanellope's friendship - a cornerstone of the original film - will be expanded on in the sequel, and the internet setting has enormous potential.

"The scope and scale are so vast and the possibilities for comedy are endless. The relationship between Vanellope and Ralph, we're going to see that again, and the comedy that comes with the two of them," says Moore.

"We're going to see their friendship tested by getting to the internet. So everything you loved about the first one and a whole lot more. "

Disney has also confirmed John C Reilly and Sarah Silverman will both return to voice Ralph and Vanellope, respectively.
