Disney has released the first teaser trailer for its live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, which stars Emma Watson, Ewan McGregor and Sir Ian McKellen.

The trailer gives precious little away other than a look inside the Beast's desolate castle and a fleeting glimpse of Watson as Belle.

A few strains of the theme song from the 1991 animated classic are also heard.

Based on a French fairy tale published in 1756 by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, Beauty and the Beast tells the story of Belle, who is taken prisoner by the Beast (Dan Stevens) in his castle.

A host of big names play the castle's enchanted staff, including McGregor as Lumiere the candelabra, Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza the harpsichord, Sir Ian McKellen as Cogsworth the clock, Emma Thompson as Mrs Potts the teapot, Audra McDonald as Madame Garderobe the wardrobe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette the feather duster.

The cast is rounded out by Luke Evans (Gaston), Kevin Kline (Maurice) and Josh Gad (Lefou).

Composer Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards for his work on the 1991 film, is lending his talents to the score, which will comprise new arrangements of the original songs as well as new songs written by Menken and Tim Rice.

The film is directed by Bill Condon, who directed the final two instalments of The Twilight Saga. He also wrote the musical films Chicago and Dreamgirls.

Beauty and the Beast will be released in New Zealand in April 2017.
