New Zealand’s top selling independent recording artist, Fat Freddie’s Drop are on yet another European tour.

Everybody knows the band has fat beats and funky as tones, but does everybody know Dobie Blaze?

“That's just a stage name I use to get into character,” he says.

Blaze, whose real name is Iain Gordon, is the man behind the Freddie’s beautiful chords and synthy-sensations.

“I learnt to play keyboards down on the farm, my mum bought a keyboard and we just started too-tooing around with it,” he says.

He moved to Wellington, attended Whitirea Polytechnic, met some guys there and started jamming with a band called Bongmaster.

“That core group of musicians was the start of the Freddie’s,” he says.

And there’s been a lot of moments to remember along the way.

“Just being able to do it, to sell out the Wellington Opera House here tonight. We played the Sydney Opera House which was amazing, and most recently we packed out the Village Underground in London,” he explains.

They've just appeared in the London Sunday Times earning respect for rejecting the advances of the big record labels.

But, apart from making music with the Freddie’s, Mr Gordon is also a composer in his own right

At his shop in Paekakariki he is selling more than just records.

“Well we sell hats, Egyptian lamps, dragon pyjamas, vintage clothing, wind up phone chargers and synthesiser music,” he says.
