Legendary broadcaster Dr Demento – the wacky radio host who introduced the world to Weird Al Yankovic – has announced his long-running radio show is no more.

The Dr Demento Show began in 1970 as an outlet for music too silly and strange for regular radio.

In the mid-to-late 1970s, a young Weird Al began sending home-recorded tapes to Dr Demento, who'd play them on his show. In the early 1980s, the exposure helped Weird Al bring parodies like 'My Bologna', 'I Love Rocky Road'  and 'Another One Rides the Bus' to a US-wide audience.

Other songs made famous by the show include Barnes and Barnes' 'Fish Heads' and Christmas classic 'Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer'.

Dr Demento – real name Barret Hansen – will continue to broadcast, but only through his website.
