Rapper Drake's latest album If You're Reading This It's Too Late has become America's first platinum release of the year.

The 'Started From the Bottom' hit maker unveiled the project on Apple's iTunes music service in February, without any promotion or fanfare, and it debuted atop America's Billboard 200 chart.

If You're Reading This It's Too Late has since crossed the one million sales mark and Drake took to Instagram on Monday night to share his gratitude with fans.

Alongside a cover photo of the album, which Drake frequently refers to as a mixtape, he writes, "Platinum off the tape. Views up next. Thank you once again."

Drake is preparing to release his next project, Views from the 6, later this year.

He is the second artist to score a platinum plaque in 2015 - Taylor Swift's 1989, which was released in late 2014, has sold more than 1.4 million copies since the start of the year, taking its total soaring past the 5.1 million mark.
