Karl Urban's Judge Dredd revamp has been given a big boost in Britain - the action sci-fi blockbuster has rocketed to the top of the box office.

The film has become the first R18 movie to hit number one in British cinemas since 2010 - and it beat out Keira Knightley's Anna Karenina, Lawless and Total Recall to get there.

Dredd was the only film to break US$1 million at the UK box office last week.

Critics have generally loved the comic book adaptation too – it has a 95 percent rating on review aggregator rottentomatoes.com, based on 43 reviews.

Rottentomatoes.com is running with the consensus: “Fuelled by bombastic violence and impressive special effects, rooted in self-satire and deadpan humour, Dredd is a rare example of a remake that actually works.”

Starring alongside New Zealander Karl Urban in the film are Olivia Thirlby (Juno), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Wood Harris (The Wire). Based on John Wagner’s comics, Dredd is written by Alex Garland (Sunshine) and directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point).

Dredd is released in New Zealand cinemas October 4.
