Earth, Wind & Fire founder Maurice White has died, aged 74.

Mr White died on Wednesday (local time) in his Los Angeles home.

He had been battling Parkinson's Disease since the early 1990s, and his health had deteriorated in the past few months. He stopped touring because of his condition in 1994.

Mr White founded the funk-soul band in Chicago in the late 1960s with his brothers Verdine and Fred.

He was the band's chief songwriter and producer, and shared vocals with lead singer Philip Bailey.

The band's hits include 'September', and 'Boogie Wonderland', which continue to appear on music playlists across the globe.

The band sold more than 90 million albums worldwide, Variety reports, and is set to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Grammy Awards on February 15.

Mr White has won seven Grammys and 21 nominations.

Mr White also appears in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame.

Earth, Wind & Fire was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
