Eddie the Eagle has just landed in New Zealand cinemas the feature film based on the life of British ski jumper Mike 'Eddie the Eagle' Edwards.

Ever since Eddie was a kid, all he wanted to be was an Olympian. Despite not being terribly good at sport. Any sport.

Then he discovered he didn't entirely suck at skiing, and his focus shifted to the Winter Olympics.

And when he then discovered that in the overall scheme of things, qualifying for the ski jump event was, in fact, possibly attainable, Eddie did everything in his power to do just that.

Of course he'd need some training -- and who better to turn to than Wolverine?

Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton enjoys a big change of pace here as Eddie, and he's a perfect foil for Hugh Jackman, together keeping the simple story flowing along nicely.

This film reminded me how much we all love a good underdog story -- especially one we watched on our old Phillips K9 TVs all those years ago.

Like Eddie himself, this film isn't quite a medal winner -- but it's definitely a crowd-pleaser. And somehow that feels just right.

Three stars.
