Eight minutes of DayZ pre-alpha gameplay footage

New Zealander Dean Hall, one of the developers behind open-world multiplayer zombie survival game DayZ, has posted a new video on YouTube showing off over eight minutes of pre-alpha footage of the standalone game.

The video shows up close combat with zombies, as well as some of the game's exploration elements. The clip "makes no effort to mask the variety of bugs", with Hall stating the development team are focused on getting the multiplayer servers stable so that an alpha build of the game can be released.

DayZ started as a mod for first-person shooter Arma 2, turning the military shooter into a lifelike simulation of a zombie apocalypse, complete with scavenging for resources, fragile alliances formed with other players, and permanent death (at the time of writing, the average life expectancy for players in the game is one hour, nine minutes).

The standalone version of DayZ was announced in 2012, but no release date has been set.
