Ellen DeGeneres confused by Caitlyn Jenner's gay marriage views

It seems Caitlyn Jenner's traditional views on marriage equality don't sit too well with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, who interviewed the reality star earlier this week.

During the interview, which aired on the season premiere of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, DeGeneres asked Jenner about her views as a Republican, given that political following is generally unsupportive of marriage equality and trans-gender people like Jenner.

"I have to admit I remember 15 years ago, 20 years ago, whatever it was when this whole gay marriage issue came up, at first I was not for it," Jenner told DeGeneres.

"I thought 'I'm a traditionalist'. I'm older than most people in the audience. I mean, I kind of like tradition and it's always been a man and a woman, and I'm thinking I don't quite get it. But as time has gone on, I think like a lot of people on this issue have really changed your thinking here to 'I don't ever want to stand in front of somebody's happiness'."

While Jenner said she was now "on board" with marriage equality, which was recently legalised in the United States, she didn't seem to be a full supporter.

"If that word marriage is really that important to you, I can go with it," she said.

Those views were a little hard for DeGeneres to swallow, given she's been married to her partner, Portia de Rossi, since 2008.

"Marriage is an important word because marriage is marriage and equality is equality – we want the same word that everyone else has," DeGeneres told Jenner.

After the interview aired, DeGeneres told radio host Howard Stern she was confused by Jenner's comments.

"She still has a judgement about gay marriage.

"I said, 'you're still wanting people to understand and accept you, this is like really confusing to people and you still have a judgement about gay people and marriage'."

When Stern asked whether Jenner danced on the show – as most guests and audience members do – DeGeneres said she didn't.

"I don't think she's a dancer.

"Maybe she didn't want to dance with me because I'm a lesbian."
