Scottish soul sensation Emeli Sande is set to be saluted at Essence magazine's 2014 Black Women in Music event.

The 'Next to Me' hitmaker will be feted for the phenomenal success of her 2012 debut album, Our Version of Events, which was recently named the UK's top-selling record for the second year in a row.

She will also perform at the fifth annual prizegiving, which will take place in Los Angeles on January 22 in the run up to the Grammy Awards.

Essence president Michelle Ebanks tells Billboard.com, "Emeli is a global, multi-faceted artist, extraordinary storyteller and a bold and beautiful collaborator whose future is extremely bright. She follows in the tradition of what Essence has always done: supporting artists who are doing incredible things."

Beyonce's sister, R&B singer/DJ Solange Knowles, and British soul newcomer Lianna La Havas were the 2013 honourees, while previous Essence prizewinners include Mary J Blige and Kelly Rowland.
