Three fire engines were called to the set of a UK TV show on Tuesday night after nearby residents reported seeing a huge explosion which turned out to be part of filming.

Teams of emergency workers raced to the set of popular British soap opera Coronation Street in Salford, England to deal with a massive "fireball" which had been reported by concerned locals.

However, the firefighters soon discovered the explosion was part of special effects being used for an upcoming episode.

A spokesman for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service says: "At 9:25pm on Tuesday April 14 2015, we received reports of an explosion and a fireball seen on the set of Coronation Street... Three fire engines and an officer were sent to the scene but fortunately it turned out to be a false alarm - the explosion was caused by special effects."

A message was also posted on the fire brigade's official Twitter page urging local residents to stop calling emergency services to report the blast.

The tweet reads, "The Coronation Street set IS NOT on fire! People have reported hearing an explosion and seeing flames but it was part of special effects."
