Emma Watson's latest film flops in UK

Former Harry Potter actress Emma Watson's latest film Colonia has hit the cinemas  and made a total opening take of £47 (NZD$85) at the UK box office.

Colonia stars Ms Watson as a young German caught up in a Chilean military coup. When her boyfriend is kidnapped, she goes underground, and joins a cult to try and find him.

The film received mixed reviews from critics - although it won five nominations from the German Film Awards, including best film and best director.

On reviewing site Rotten Tomatoes it is currently sitting at a 23 percent rating, while on Internet Movie database (IMBb ) it has a 7.1/10 rating.

The small takings in the United Kingdom were expected however, as its distribution plan is based around home-streaming. The cinema release was mostly symbolic - it only played in three cinemas.

These tactics and the box office figures suggest that despite star casts the public is increasingly choosing to stay at home for couch based viewing.

In the United States box office the film received US$2.3 million.
