For many people, the Lord of the Rings phenomenon is in that awkward void of being too old for news and too recent to be history. However that is not the case for those who built up enduring friendships among the armies of extras.

Philip Eastwood had no interest in being an extra, but was chased down the road by casting directors after Peter Jackson spotted him. Eastwood says the experience has changed his life.

Most of the extras answered audition calls that were looking for very specific looks.

Wayne Philips was cast in a Rohan role as commander of the archers.

At 84-years-old, Laurie Penney, a World War Two veteran and prisoner of war, led a parade Hobbits at the world premiere.

Like most of the Lord of the Rings trilogy extras who also appeared in King Kong, dressed in their finery or like Paul Giles, down and out on the New York set in Lower Hutt.

While of the extras say they have retired from the craft, that may all change if Peter Jackson goes on to make The Hobbit, the prequel to Lord of the Rings.
