Unlike previous games in the series, Fallout 4 will not have a level cap, and will allow players to keep playing even after completing the main storyline.

Developer Bethesda Game Studios confirmed the news on Twitter today.

All previous Fallout games had limits to how high you could level your character. Fallout capped at 21; Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel capped at 99; Fallout 3 capped at 20, or 30 with the Broken Steel add-on; and Fallout: New Vegas capped at 30, with each expansion adding an extra five levels to a maximum of 50.

While continuing the game after completing the story is common in open-world games like Fallout, this wasn't the case in either Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas, though the former did add this with the Broken Steel add-on.
