Tom Cruise's latest Mission: Impossible blockbuster has scored a second Sunday at number one on the US box office countdown, keeping the latest Fantastic Four movie off the top.

The Fox film, licensed from Marvel Comics, has debuted in second place behind Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, with ticket sales of US$3 million less than the spy movie, which earned US$29.4 million in its second weekend on release.

The Fantastic Four reboot pulled in a measly US$26.2 million and terrible reviews. Experts had predicted the superhero movie would pull in US$40 million, after being produced with a budget of US$122 million.

The consensus at RottenTomatoes.com reads: "Dull and downbeat, this Fantastic Four proves a woefully misguided attempt to translate a classic comic series without the humour, joy, or colourful thrills that made it great."

Kate Rodger gave the film one star, saying: "Fantastic Four should only describe the number of minutes it takes to choose a ticket to something else."

The fifth Mission: Impossible movie has now cracked US$100 million in 10 days.

Australian actor Joel Edgerton's R-rated thriller The Gift, opens in third place with a distant US$12 million, while road trip comedy Vacation and Marvel Studios' Ant-Man round out the new top five.

Meryl Streep's new movie Ricki & the Flash debuts at seven with a disappointing US$7 million opening weekend take.
