Rapper Fat Joe is facing two years behind bars after pleading guilty to two counts of tax evasion.

The Lean Back hitmaker, real name Joseph Cartagena, has been accused of owing nearly $US718,038 ($NZ861,057) in back taxes to the US government between the years of 2007 and 2010.

On Thursday, the hip-hop star appeared in a New Jersey court and admitted to falling behind on payments for at least two of the years (07-08), during which he earned almost $US3 million ($NZ3.6 million).

He was released after posting $US250,000 ($NZ299,790) bail.

The rapper is due back before a judge in April, and if convicted, faces a maximum of two years in prison and a $200,000 ($NZ239,840) penalty, according to TMZ.com.
