R&B star Frank Ocean has been forced to postpone plans to travel to Egypt as a result of the ongoing civil unrest which led to the removal of President Mohamed Morsi last week.
The singer, who is currently in the middle of a world tour, had hoped to make a stop in Cairo during his time off, but he has had to reconsider the trip as violent protests continue to rock the city.
Instead, Ocean is contemplating heading to South Africa to pay his respects to ailing former leader and civil rights icon Nelson Mandela, who remains in a critical condition in a Pretoria hospital as a result of a recurring lung infection.
In a post on his Tumblr, the musician writes, "i really wanted to go to cairo in between (concerts in) europe and australia.. might let things settle some.. go to south africa instead and place some flowers on a gate for the president. for being epic and 94."
Ocean also used the fan update to reveal he is self-funding his current tour - because he has no new projects to promote.
He adds, "all the travel isn't in support of an album or anything like that really- past or ahead. there's no label or touring firm dollars involved. all pennies from my pocket. in support of some odd daydream. ops (opportunities) to photograph crowds and clouds from planes."
Violence in Egypt has spiralled out of control in recent days - at least 42 pro-Morsi activists from the Muslim Brotherhood group were shot dead by army soldiers on Monday, in the latest clash between the rival political parties following the military coup on July 3. Adly Mansour has been appointed interim president.
