Full Interview: Andrew Goldman talks about The Desk

Last month I got word that Paul Henry had a secret film premiering at the Florida Film Festival.

I say 'secret' because no one in New Zealand (except Paul Henry) knew about it. The film was called The Desk, which appeared to be a documentary looking at Paul trying to crack the American market. It also had something to do with the film’s director, Andrew Goldman, who had recently been sacked from the New York Times.

I wrote about The Desk for The Spinoff and the story spread. Goldman tweeted me, hinting he was keen for the film to play in New Zealand – Henry’s hometown.

People were talking, and Goldman’s dream was about to come true: His film was picked up by DocEdge, which means New Zealand now gets to watch it.

Goldman landed in New Zealand today at 6am, so I sat down to talk with him about the film he made with one of our biggest stars, Paul Henry.

Along the way, it emerged that Goldman’s having some difficulty getting in touch with Henry.

“It's interesting, because Paul and I have been in fairly regular touch… until he saw the film. And he has been – cagey - might be the right word? What's the word when you send emails to someone and they don't respond to you?”

I talked to Goldman for 20 minutes. It was a fascinating interview about a film, a friendship, and the rocky road facing journalism.
