British actor Peter Vaughan, known for his roles in Porridge and Games of Thrones, has died aged 93.

His agent Sally Long-Innes says he died on Tuesday (local time), surrounded by his family.

Vaughan played Maester Aemon, the elderly, blind leader of the Night's Watch in Game of Thrones, portraying the character until he was 92.

Despite appearing in only a few episodes of UK sitcom Porridge, Vaughan put his wide frame and deep tones to comically menacing effect as prison godfather Harry Grout.

Born in 1923 in Shropshire, UK, Vaughan began his career in theatre. He then joined the army during World War II, when he served as an officer in Normandy and Belgium before being transferred to the Far East.

He was married to actress Billie Whitelaw for 14 years, and later married Lillias Walker.
