The release of Ryan Gosling's new Mafia movie Gangster Squad has been delayed to allow film bosses to edit out a scene featuring a shooting in a cinema.

The film, which also stars Emma Stone, Sean Penn, and Josh Brolin, was due to hit theatres in September, but the release date has now been changed following the mass killing of cinemagoers in Colorado on Friday.

Gangster Squad will reportedly be pushed back until January to allow movie bosses time to carry out reshoots to replace a key scene in which a gunman opens fire on an audience in a movie theatre, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The scene, filmed at the famous Grauman's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles, was featured in a trailer for Gangster Squad which has now been pulled from cinemas in the aftermath of the shooting in Aurora, where 12 people were killed and 58 injured during a screening of new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises.
