A stretch of road in Glenn Frey's hometown of Royal Oak, Michigan, is to be renamed after the late Eagles founder member.

Frey's death aged 67 on January 18 prompted fans of the 'Hotel California' musician to campaign for the city to consider proposals to honour its famous son.

On Thursday (local time), officials at the Royal Oak School Board, where Frey was once a pupil, unanimously voted to change the name of a stretch of road which runs parallel to the school to Glenn Frey Dr.

The new signs honouring the rock legend will be installed during a ceremony on February 18, with Royal Oak Mayor Jim Ellison telling the Detroit Free Press, "I don't think we can come up with a better tribute to one of our most famous residents."

After beginning his music career in nearby Detroit, Michigan, Frey moved to California and teamed up with fellow musician Don Henley to form the Eagles.

The band enjoyed a run of chart success throughout the 1970s, with hits such as 'Take It To The Limit', 'Tequila Sunrise', and 'Desperado'.
