Koko the gorilla can use sign language to communicate more than 1000 words - but now she's showcased quite a different skill in a video posted online.

The 127kg ape was visited by Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, who watched in awe and admiration as Koko experimented on the instrument that he's mastered over decades.

In the video, Flea offers his support as Koko strums and nibbles at the bass guitar, even offering to give her the instrument due to the 45-year-old gorilla's obvious attachment to it.

Flea later called his meeting with Koko "the greatest thing that could ever happen", and said it would be a day he will "never forget in my life".

And it looks as though the feelings were mutual, with the Gorilla Foundation saying Koko loved her time trying out the bass with Flea.

"Koko was thrilled by the mellow sounds and a jamming session followed with Koko strumming on Flea's bass!" said a post on the foundation's website.

"Watch for more news on future collaborations between the two."
