Grand Theft Auto movie faces trademark suit

Producers of Daniel Radcliffe's upcoming Grand Theft Auto TV movie have been hit with a trademark infringement lawsuit.

The Harry Potter star portrays video game developer Sam Houser in Game Changer, which tells the story of Houser's battle with a US lawyer who tried to ban Grand Theft Auto as he believed it promoted real-life violence.

Bosses at Take-Two Interactive, who own Grand Theft Auto developer and publisher Rockstar Games, have now filed a lawsuit against BBC officials to ensure they do not misuse trademarks relating to the video game series in their "unofficial" film.

A representative for Take-Two tells uk.ign.com, "While holders of the trademarks referenced in the film title and its promotion, Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project. Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC's pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games. We have attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution. It is our obligation to protect our intellectual property and unfortunately in this case litigation was necessary."

Game Changer is set for broadcast in the UK later this year.
