Tui-award winning alt-country band Great North is set to release their third album next month.

It's been almost two years since they released Halves, an album that went on to win Folk Album of the Year at the 2013 New Zealand Music Awards.

Halves was also long-listed for a Silver Scroll and saw the band touring New Zealand.

The new album, Up In Smoke, features Hayden Donnell on lead vocals, guitar and piano, with his wife Rachel returning on bass and vocals.

New band member Ryan Attwood joins the band on Up In Smoke on drums.

The album was recorded with long-time collaborator and producer David Parker at his Oratia-based Little Monster Studios.

Great North has will be embarking on a national tour throughout May and June.

The band promises Up In Smoke is "bigger and bolder" than previous albums, while retaining the elements that have won them acclaim from New Zealand’s alt-country fans.

A new song by Great North, 'Spirits', is available on bandcamp.com now as a free download ahead of the release of Up In Smoke on May 9.
