Great wine at an affordable price

It’s no secret that I love good wine.

In fact, I wish I could drink a lot more wine than I do, but there is one thing stopping me – money.

I have tastes my wallet cannot afford. Therefore, one of my favourite pastimes has been hunting down great wine at affordable prices.

One technique is to go for a nice winery’s second label.

Generally a second label will be offered by a respected winery, as an affordable alternative to their main wine, while still maintaining the high level of quality you have come to expect from their brand.

Put simply, you can think of it as the little brother.

Here’s an example:

Pinot noir is one of my favourite grapes. But to get something decent, you have to pay quite a lot.

The Palliser Estate 2008 Pinot Noir is a very well crafted wine. Coming from Martinborough, the geography is perfect for Pinot Noir.

However, at $52 per bottle, it’s not a wine I could personally warrant buying often.

The alternative is the Pencarrow 2009 Pinot Noir.

Pencarrow is the second label to Palliser Estate. The wine has dark berry notes on the nose, with a dusting of spice. Ripe berry notes dominate the palate, with silky well-rounded tannins finishing a very drinkable wine.

Priced at around $20, Pencarrow is a great alternative to its big brother, Palliser Estate.
