Guardians of the Galaxy is among those leading the way at the 2015 MTV Movie Awards.

The superhero flick has been nominated for seven of the gongs, the same amount as The Fault in Our Stars and Bad Neighbours. Tailing them are 22 Jump Street and Whiplash, which both scooped five nods.

Probably the most contested will be the movie of the year category, which sees American Sniper, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1, Guardians of the Galaxy, Gone Girl, The Fault in Our Stars, Boyhood, Whiplash and Selma all in the running.

Also of note is the best actress prize, which will go to either Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1), Emma Stone (Birdman), Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars), Reese Witherspoon (Wild) or Scarlett Johansson (Lucy).

Competing for the male version are Bradley Cooper (American Sniper), Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Miles Teller (Whiplash) and Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher).

Unlike some slightly stiffer ceremonies, the MTV Movie Awards also likes to hand accolades out for fun reasons. So this year Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), Annabelle Wallis (Annabelle), Jennifer Lopez (The Boy Next Door), Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner) and Zach Gilford (The Purge: Anarchy) could all take home the Best Scared-As-Sh*t prize.

Another hotly-contested award will be for the Best Shirtless Performance, which this year will go to either Zac Efron (Bad Neighbours), Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Channing Tatum (Foxcatcher), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars) or Kate Upton (The Other Woman).

Other gongs to be handed out on the night include Best Kiss, Best Fight, Best WTF Moment and Best Villain.

The ceremony will take place on April 12 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.
